AB OBJECTIVE: To provide a model of comprehensive service delivery in NYC
for women living with HIV & their identified family members. How can
differing needs of women be met when models based upon serving gay men?
METHODS: Project evolved via empowering process of individual HIV+ women
to group identification, then partnership with NYC officials, service
providers, funders and advocates. RESULTS: Model based upon roundtable
professional/medical testimony, speakout experiences of HIV+ women &
family, other service providers. Evolution of 3 phase model: Case
Management, Housing & Primary Care with ancillary childcare, emergency
respite, legal advocacy & intervention, alternative therapies, hands on
nutrition & health education for family. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
Infected and affected women with HIV must be integral part of service
planning and delivery. Prevention within family crucial to stopping
vicious cycle of HIV infection adolescents. From disclosure to
guardianship & permanency planning, mothers play a major role in
protecting their family from stigma, violence & fear HIV.
